Religious Education (RE)

 

At Greenpark Academy, through the teaching of Religious Education, we wish to empower of pupils to make sense of religion and worldviews around them, and begin to understand the complex world in which they live.

 

R.E. teaching at Greenpark Academy uses a scheme based on the Norfolk Agreed 2019 Syllabus to enable children to become free thinking, critical participants of public discourse, who can make informed judgements about important matters of religion and belief which shape the world that they live in.

 

We want pupils to be able to develop religious literacy, with our specific subject outcomes being related to the knowledge and understanding of religion and worldviews:

  • Know about and understand a range of religious and non-religious worldviews by learning to see these through theological, philosophical and human/social science viewpoints.
  • Express ideas and insights about the nature, significance and impact of religious and non-religious worldviews through a multi-disciplinary approach.
  • Gain and use skills rooted in theology (thinking through believing), philosophy (thinking through thinking)) and the human/social sciences (thinking through living) to critically engage with religious and non-religious worldviews.

In theology we are exploring questions that have been raised by religions and worldviews throughout history, looking at where beliefs come from, how they have changed over time and how they are applied and relate to each other.

 

Philosophy is about finding out how and whether things make sense.  It deals with questions of morality and ethics, reality, knowledge and existence.  It uses dialogue, discussion and debate to refine the way that we look at the world.

 

The human/social sciences explore the many ways in which people practise their beliefs.  It looks at the impact of beliefs on individuals, communities and societies in order to promote a better understanding of the ways in which people’s views on issues such as power, gender, compassion, and so on can be shaped by their beliefs

 

In addition to the development of knowledge and understanding of religion and worldviews, the RE scheme contributes to the following broader educational aims:
